Theo Thorsson is a Swedish-Mexican composer and conductor whose work brings together the clarity of Nordic musical thought, the directness of Latin American expressivity, and the structural discipline he developed in Vienna. Based in Austria and active across Central Europe, he writes for film, liturgical settings, solo instruments, and chamber ensembles. Recent work includes the premiere of “Brauteinzug” for organ at the Dominikanerkirche Retz, the completed score for the short film “Despiértame“, which is awaiting its premiere, and his conducting debut with the Gesangverein der Steirer in Wien at the Schubertkirche. He is currently developing new work for the 2026 season, including a solo violin piece and an oboe project alongside further chamber music.
Thorssonʼs artistic approach is shaped by an unusual trajectory. Raised between Sweden and Mexico, he began working with ensembles in Mexico City before relocating to Vienna, where he spent years inside major music institutions. At the Wiener Konzerthaus he worked as Inspizient (Stage Manager), with direct exposure to rehearsal practice and the operational rhythms of professional orchestras. In the Philharmonie der Universität Wien he served as librarian, KBB assistant, and assistant conductor, supporting repertoire preparation and performance flow. This background gave him a pragmatic understanding of ensemble psychology, spatial acoustics, and the realities of rehearsal time, which informs both his conducting and his writing.
Fluent in several languages and active along the Vienna–Budapest axis, he collaborates with musicians across Austria, Hungary, Sweden, and Mexico. His current work focuses on projects that integrate the precision of his institutional training with the cross-cultural sensibility of his upbringing.
